This page is being served by an old DELL laptop in its retirement, using less than 10% idle CPU on Ubuntu Server running nginx. This laptop is from 2011 and doesn't even need to use the fans!
As per my measurements of power usage, this "web server" costs less than 24 dollars per YEAR to keep on 24/7 on my home network. Compare that to over $240 per year for a Wordpress site with far more vulnerabilities, or an AWS instance serving your web server, which costs at minimum $40 per year as of 2025.
Self hosting is just way cheaper! And let's be honest, static HTML is just way more secure.
Whenever you consider throwing away an old laptop as tech waste, consider that you're tossing a potential always-on, accessible-from-anywhere web server. A laptop built to be replaced a decade ago still serving a valuable purpose in 2025! Imagine that.
